October 3, 2017 – The United Nations declared in 1999, that October 4 through October 10 each year would be recognized as World Space Week, a time “to celebrate at the international level, the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition.”
The Space Foundation plans to do just that with a new exhibit opening and half price admission October 4, 5, 6 and 10. The theme for World Space Week 2017 is “Exploring New Worlds in Space,” which ties in with the new Discovery Center exhibit, Scott Carpenter Station – Mission to Europa.
On display at the Discovery Center since 2013, the Scott Carpenter Space Analog Station was designed by NASA in 1997 as an underwater habitat and research station. It was recently refurbished, thanks to a grant from Battelle, and will be used in the new exhibit to teach visitors about exploration of Jupiter’s icy moon Europa.
On October 4, the Discovery Center will host its monthly Homeschool Day, where homeschool students will learn about Sputnik, the first man-made object to orbit the Earth. Homeschool Days are offered each month, with new themes and activities designed to engage learners on all levels. These activities are a great way to meet other homeschoolers in the area and help enrich your child’s learning experience.
Free Admission On October 7 As Space Foundation Discovery Center Turns Five
Also taking place during World Space Week, is the fifth anniversary of the opening of the Space Foundation Discovery Center. The Discovery Center was opened in 2012, as the Pikes Peak region’s only public space, science and technology center. On Saturday, Oct. 7, the Discovery Center will celebrate its fifth year of learning, exploration and fun. More than 100,000 guests have come through the doors over the past five years, and for this one day, on Oct. 7, admission will be free, as visitors celebrate space and the many ways space exploration enriches our lives here on Earth.
