August 17, 2016 – Col. David N. Miller Jr. assumed command of the 460th Space Wing during a change of command ceremony on Buckley Air Force Base, Colorado, on August 12. Miller assumed command from Col. John Wagner, who has served as the commander since June 2014.

Lt. Gen. David J. Buck, Commander, 14th Air Force (Air Forces Strategic), Air Force Space Command; and Commander, Joint Functional Component Command for Space, U.S. Strategic Command, Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, was the presiding officer for the ceremony.

Buck passed the wing’s guidon from Wagner to Miller, signifying the change of Buckley AFB’s top leader. During his speech at the ceremony, Buck expressed his tremendous support and respect for each commander.

“You took the 460th Space Wing to a new level of excellence,” said Buck to Wagner. “As I’ve said before, you’ve often told me this was the most rewarding two years of your career. In my perspective, and everyone else’s perspective, you absolutely crushed it.”

He then addressed the new commander.

“You are the perfect leader to take command over the 460th Space Wing,” said Buck, speaking to Miller. “I’ve said this before, I simply don’t hire commanders unless I have 100 percent confidence in them. So trust me when I say, Col. David Miller has my utmost confidence.”

Before transitioning his leadership to Miller, Wagner expressed both his wife’s and his personal appreciation for the 460th SW.

“We’re humble to have served 26 months with some of the most amazing people we’ve ever met,” said Wagner. “I appreciate the positive, professional and absolutely outstanding Airmen and their families who serve in this wing, both those standing here today and those who couldn’t be with us, because they’re a man on the roster of our nation’s allies.”

Prior to his arrival at Buckley AFB, Miller was the senior advisor to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Iraqi Ministry of Interior at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, where he advised senior leaders on strategy for the security and defense of the region.

After assuming command, Miller took the podium to address the wing for the first time.

“I’ve been thoroughly impressed with everything I’ve seen,” said Miller. “You are without a doubt the finest Airmen in the world, and the greatest Air Force in the world. I thank you for your service, and I look forward to working with you and for you.”
